Ophthalmic Ultrasonography

Ophthalmic ultrasonography is a non-invasive imaging technique used to visualize the internal structures of the eye, especially in cases where direct observation is not possible due to the opacity of the cornea, lens, or vitreous body. This procedure is particularly helpful in evaluating the eye’s anatomy, detecting tumours, assessing retinal detachment, diagnosing cataracts, and measuring the size of the eyeball or assessing the optic nerve.
At Desai Eye Institute, ophthalmic ultrasonography is performed using high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the eye. A small probe (transducer) is gently placed on the closed eyelid or directly over the eye, emitting sound waves that bounce off the internal structures and return to the device, creating an image. The procedure is painless and typically takes just a few minutes.
Ophthalmic ultrasonography is essential for diagnosing and monitoring a variety of eye conditions, providing valuable information for treatment planning and intervention. It is especially useful when other imaging techniques cannot be used, ensuring comprehensive eye care for all patients.
