Ophthalmoscopy - Indirect

Ophthalmoscopy, also known as funduscopy, is a medical examination procedure used to view the interior of the eye, specifically the retina, optic disc, macula, and blood vessels. It is a vital diagnostic tool for detecting various eye conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment.
In indirect ophthalmoscopy, a light source and a special lens are used to examine the back of the eye. The technique allows for a wide field of view and is often employed to assess the optic nerve head and peripheral retina, areas that are typically difficult to visualize with direct ophthalmoscopy.

Procedure Overview: The patient is positioned comfortably, and the eye is dilated using eye drops to widen the pupil. The ophthalmologist then uses an indirect ophthalmoscope, a handheld device with a light and a lens, to examine the retina. The procedure may be performed with the patient sitting upright or lying down, depending on the clinical scenario.
