Lacrimal Syringing and Probing

Lacrimal Syringing and Probing are diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed to treat blockages or dysfunction in the tear drainage system, primarily the nasolacrimal duct. These procedures are commonly used to address conditions such as dacryocystitis (inflammation of the tear sac), congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, or acquired blockages. Lacrimal syringing involves the gentle flushing of saline through the tear duct to assess patency and clear any obstructions. Probing is a technique where a fine instrument is used to probe and open blocked tear ducts, often under local anesthesia. Both procedures are typically done in outpatient settings with minimal recovery time.
At Desai Eye Institute, these procedures are frequently performed to alleviate symptoms such as excessive tearing (epiphora) and recurrent eye infections caused by the blockage. Syringing helps confirm the presence of obstruction, while probing is performed if the obstruction is confirmed, restoring normal tear drainage. The procedure is usually well-tolerated and has a high success rate for relieving symptoms. Post-procedure care involves ensuring the tear duct remains clear and monitoring for any signs of infection or complications.
